Jalori Pass

Jalori Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 10,800 ft
(3.120m) above the sea level, situated in the Kullu district of Himachal
Pradesh. The pass is the nearest mountain pass from Delhi,
approximately 600 km away, and features on every adventure tourist’s
map.

Make sure you get your vehicle and yourself well-prepared before driving
this road. At the top of the Jaluri pass there are restaurants
available to take lunch, and a Mahakali temple known as Jalori Mata,
visited by thousands of devotees from the nearby villages. Jalori Pass
is the first Indian pass to open every year, and is drive able by all
vehicles, but are advised to go down in first gear only, according to
Indian signals. This pass remains closed in peak on winter only. So in
months of December, January and February you need to check before using
this road. Usually opens around second week of March every year and
closes mid December, depending on the snow.

The
road’s winding design, providing stunning panoramic views, is very
curvy and fun for a leisurely ride, so it pays to take it slow. From
Ghayagi to Jalori Pass, the road is a mix of mud and pebbles restricting
the speed of the vehicle to barely 20 kmph. After Shoja, the climb to
Jalori Pass is steep and just about 3 kms before the pass, road
conditions become bad, narrow and steep which makes it more difficult to
climb even in first gear.

From Jalori Pass you can go for trek through thick Jungles to reach the Holy Sereulsar lake.
It is a very beautiful trek through very thick jungles. The
lake lies at an altitude of 11500 feet. A trek to this area
in december is a rewarding sight with the lake frozen white.

A traveler on this road must follow some rules: Extreme caution
advised, drive in first gear only, steepest gradient, most dangerous

Bhuntar, situated

Situated in the
Kulu Valley, Malana Village in Manikaran is famous for its lush green hills.
This village is considered to be the oldest democracy in the world. No
interference of the outsiders is entertained here and all disputes of the
village are settled between themselves.

According to a legend the village is Greek in origin. It is said that some of
the soldiers from Alexander’s army had settled here and these villagers are
their descendants. The villagers have strange looks, sharp features, narrow
eyes and dark bronze skin. They speak a dialect of their own, not used by
anybody else.Malana’s proximity with the Chanderkhani Pass, the ancient temple
of Jamlu and its distinct, social and cultural characteristics attract many
visitors to the village. Some basic tourist accommodations are now available in
the village.

Around Malana

Solang Valley : A beautiful valley between Manali and Kothi which offers
views of the glaciers and snow covered mountain peaks. The plateau is frequently
used for holding camps by the trekking parties. The surrounding areas of Manali
from 3 to 20 km. are suitable for rock climbing. The winter skiing festival is
organised here as well as training in skiing is imparted at this place.

Jagatsukh, the
erstwhile capital of Kullu, is one of the biggest villages in Kullu District,
Himachal Pradesh. This beautiful hamlet is dotted with numerous old temples.
Jagatsukh is 6 km south of Manali.Major point of attraction is an ancient Shiva
Temple, built in Shikhara style. Other tourist interests include the small
shrine of Gaurishankar and the chalet-roofed temple dedicated to Goddess
Sandhya Devi. Sharvali Devi Temple, in the nearby village Shooru, is worth
visiting.

Jagatsukh Shiva Temple is a Shikhara style shrine situated at Jagatsukh, which
is 6 km from Manali, in Himachal Pradesh.Built around the early 8th century, it
has a tri-ratha sanctum roofed by a Shikhara. The temple is of similar
architecture as that of the Naresar group of temples.

Gaurishankar Temple : Dedicated to Shiva and Parvati, Gaurishankar
Temple is an ancient stone temple located at Dashal village in Kullu District
and is 8 km from Manali. A veritable showpiece in a tranquil setting, this
Shaivite temple dates back to 12th century AD and is a fine specimen of the
“Shikhara Style”, a rare form of architecture in this part of the
country.

Manu Temple :This is dedicated to the sage Manu. Just near the Hadimba
Temple flows the Manalsu river, that culminates in the main Beas river. Across
the Manalsu river is the original village of Manali that houses the ancient
temple of the sage Manu. Manali itself is named after Manu, who is said to have
dwelt here.

Largi : (957 metres) 34 km. This is a small hamlet providing excellent
trout fishing. The famous rivers Sainj and Tirthan join the Beas a few hundred
metres below. Larji is patronised mostly by anglers.

Sharvali Devi Temple : Sharvali Devi Temple is an ancient shrine
situated at Shooru village, about eight kilometers from Manali, in Himachal
Pradesh. The temple was believed to be built by Pandavas, the mythical
characters in the great epic Mahabharata.

25 km. Naggar was the capital of the Kullu Rajas for about 1,400 years.The
gallery housing the paintings of that Russian saint – cum – philosopher –cum
–artist Nicholas Roerich is nearby and is a must in any itinerary to Naggar. It
is also known for its castle and the Nicholas Roerich’s Museum.

On the left bank of the river Beas and about three hundred metres above the
river, Naggar is delightfully situated on the wooded slope and commands an
extensive view, especially of the North-West of the valley. There are a large
number of famous temples in and around Naggar and an excellent place for a
longer stay.

Bajeshwar Mahadev Temple : ( bajaura ) 15 km.This pyramidical temple
belonging to the 8th century A.D. is embellished with wonderful carvings in
stone and sculpture in the Shikhara style. This temple is situated about 200
metres from the village in a plain between the main road and the Beas river

According to
legend, Manikaran is also associated with Lord Shiva and his divine consort,
Parbati, who lost and recovered her ear rings here. Legend has it that once
when Shiva and Parbati were relaxing by the river. Parbati’s ear rings fell nto
the water. The lord of another world ( Patal Nagari ) named Shesh Nag took
possession of them and despite Parvati’s pleas, he refused to hand them back.

However when all the gods prevailed upon him, he snorted them out of his
nostrils, causing a boiling fountain of water to erupt. the jewels thus
returned. There are temples of Ramchandra and Shiva besides the Gurudwara. This
place is famous for hot water springs. Thousands of people take a dip in its
hot water. The main water is so hot that Dal ( pulses ), Rice, Vegetables etc.
can be boiled in it.

the widest part of the valley, Katrain is 20 kms from Kulu on way to Manali.
Apple orchards and trout hatchery lend charm and prominence to the place. It is
also famous for bee keeping and Govt. trout farm at Patilkulh. The widest part
of Kullu Valley is katrain. Trout hatchery is also nearby. Sufficient
accommodation is available in Hotels of HPTDC.

KASOL: Situated on the bank of Paravati river, Kasol makes a good
holiday destination. 42 kms from Kullu, charmingly located on an open space
which slopes down to the broad expanse of clear white sand at the Parvati
river. The place is well known for trout fishing.

Arjun Gufa (CAVE): 4 kms. from Manali towards Naggar, the cave is
situated near Prini village 1 km. above the road where Arjun had meditated. This
is good 1/2 a day excursion with charming view of the brilliant mountains.

Shopping can
really be a delight in Manali if you love to bargain. Items which you can pick
up from the shops here include handicrafts, carpets, Chinese electronic goods,
Chinese clothes and shoes, Himachali jewelleries and Kullu shawls. For those
looking for something more, there are Tibetan curios such as prayer wheels,
amulets, dorjees or thunderbolts, masks, musical instruments, jewellery and
thangkas. Fresh jams, pickles, yellow chilli and wild asparagus can also be
bought from Manali.

The Mall is the
best place in Manali to shop. Apart from this, the NSC or ‘New Shopping Centre’
Market near the bus stand can also be explored for goods.

The Mall is the
main shopping area in Manali, selling local Kullu and Kinnauri shawls, rugs,
caps and footwear, imported goods, besides a range of Tibetan handicraft items.
It is more of a busy commercial street with modern concrete blocks of hotels
that spill over with tourists in the peak season. Other shopping zones in the
Mall include- Hong Kong Market, Thai Market, Tibetan Market, Dragon Shopping
Complex, Lama Underground, Shangri La Shopping Complex, New NAC Market and Snow
Lion Underground Market.

The Himachal Handicrafts Emporium and Bhuticco weavers’ co-operative in the
main Manali Mall are good for local handicrafts. Handcrafted shawls and rugs
are the major and the most popular buys here.

The Tibetan Bazaar and Tibetan Carpet centre run by the refugee community sells
thangkas, rugs, local tweeds, Buddhist paintings, bamboo souvenirs, Chinese
goods (electronics, shoes, clothes etc), silver and turquoise jewellery and
prayers wheels amongst other things. The place is overcrowded with tourists in
the summers.

If you are interested in buying more hippie and junky stuff, then the Old
Manali market is a must visit. You could even pick up fresh fruit jams, jellies
and pickles from the market and take them back as souvenirs. All the shops are
open from 10 am to 7 pm. Bargaining is a must here as most shops tend to quote
a higher price.
